This session was extremely fun despite Jared’s absence! We missed you Jared! Today’s main takeaway was the beginning of a compelling small compositional structure. We began by playing in the sonic space I’ve taken to calling glacial harmonics. The improvisation was to get from the zone in a compelling fashion to the short notes & gravity pulse concept we’ve explored a couple of times, with a coda gesture which harkens back to the glacial harmonics. Here is that initial improvisation - Session 5 First Piece Try
We proceeded with refining the form and concept for the middle section of short notes & gravity pulse and tried several different ways of focusing the playing here. Afterwhich, we played one final version of the overall composed form. It sounds like….. ! Session 5 Final piece second version
We seem to have settled in the middle section, for now, with foremost short, snipped, strikes while developing the phrase lengths, as well as the lengths with silence for this whole section, which then culminates in prolonged playing section, followed by a long silence. Then we shift the phrases to quitely lead into a glacial harmonics coda. In my mind, this opens itself up to some really nice expansion possibilities! The initial idea I had is that the glacial harmonics are very similar to the playing heard here –> Glacial Harmonics + Guitar from Session 1, and what is the coda right now, could very easily be the intruduction of this sound world with the guitar, creating a whole new section in the form.
For next weeks session, we’ll likely try to work out some details such as the way to get from the initial glacial harmonics into the short notes & gravity pulse section. Who knows, maybe this will be a strong enough nugget to keep expanding into a much larger piece!
Welp, thanks for reading!
